{"id":318,"date":"2026-07-28T07:20:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T07:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enshinryu.com\/?p=318"},"modified":"2026-07-28T07:27:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T07:27:13","slug":"what-is-enshin-ryu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enshinryu.com\/?p=318","title":{"rendered":"What Is Enshin Ry\u016b?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Beginner\u2019s Guide to a Classical Japanese Martial Tradition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more than four centuries, Enshin Ry\u016b has been transmitted from teacher to student, preserving martial methods whose origins reach back to Japan\u2019s age of the samurai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike modern martial arts developed primarily for sport or competition, Enshin Ry\u016b is a <strong>kory\u016b<\/strong>\u2014a classical Japanese martial tradition rooted in the combative knowledge and culture of the samurai period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Enshin Ry\u016b continues to be practiced as a living tradition through direct instruction and transmission from teacher to student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Origins in the Sengoku Period<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enshin Ry\u016b traces its origins to around 1580, during Japan\u2019s Sengoku, or \u201cWarring States,\u201d period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its founder, <strong>Inugami Sakon Sh\u014dgen Nagakatsu<\/strong>, was a warrior from Hikone in \u014cmi Province who served as one of the guards of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. After receiving his family\u2019s sword tradition from his father, he studied methods of <strong>kumiuchi<\/strong>, or grappling in armor, under <strong>Hayami Nagato no Kami Enshin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By bringing these grappling methods together with the sword teachings transmitted within the Inugami family, Nagakatsu established the martial system known as <strong>Kumiuchi Kenden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tradition was passed through successive generations and later reached the Kobashi family in Sanuki, present-day Kagawa Prefecture. During the Edo period, it underwent a process of reform that incorporated knowledge from several other classical martial schools while preserving the older teachings and principles of Enshin Ry\u016b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What Is Taught?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enshin Ry\u016b is not limited to swordsmanship. It is a comprehensive martial tradition in which armed and unarmed disciplines support and deepen one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The curriculum includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Iaijutsu<\/strong> \u2013 drawing the sword and responding immediately to an attack.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Yawara<\/strong> \u2013 foundational unarmed methods of grappling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kumiuchi<\/strong> \u2013 close-combat grappling methods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kenjutsu<\/strong> \u2013 swordsmanship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kumiuchi Kenden<\/strong> \u2013 advanced methods integrating grappling with the sword, including the use of the tachi and \u014ddachi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students progress gradually through the curriculum. Training develops not only technical ability, but also an understanding of timing, distance, posture, awareness, etiquette, self-discipline, and character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The individual disciplines are not studied as separate collections of techniques. Iaijutsu, yawara, kumiuchi, kenjutsu, and Kumiuchi Kenden are connected parts of a larger martial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The \u014cdachi Tradition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the distinctive features of Enshin Ry\u016b is its preservation of techniques using the <strong>\u014ddachi<\/strong>, a long sword traditionally used in the school with a blade measuring approximately 100 centimeters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of its greater size and weight, the \u014ddachi must be handled differently from a standard-length sword. Enshin Ry\u016b preserves an extensive body of teachings for its use within Kumiuchi Kenden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a small number of surviving classical traditions continue to transmit substantial methods involving this type of long sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Living Tradition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enshin Ry\u016b is not simply a collection of old techniques or a museum piece preserved unchanged from the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every classical tradition has passed through different teachers, historical periods, and circumstances. Enshin Ry\u016b has likewise developed over generations while maintaining continuity with the teachings transmitted before it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its preservation depends on regular practice, direct instruction, careful documentation, and the responsible transmission of knowledge from one generation to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim is not merely to reproduce the outward form of old movements. It is to preserve the technical principles, knowledge, spirit, and cultural heritage entrusted to each generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Beginning the Study of Enshin Ry\u016b<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beginners normally begin with Iaijutsu and Yawara, where they learn fundamental posture, movement, sword handling, etiquette, and awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As their understanding develops, students may progress into the other areas of the curriculum. Each stage provides the foundation for what follows, gradually revealing how the armed and unarmed teachings of Enshin Ry\u016b form a unified system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No previous martial arts experience is required to begin.
